Una carta inédita de samuel fritz (1721)

Abstract

Se publica aquí una carta inédita del padre Samuel Fritz, misionero jesuita de origen alemán que trabajó en la región del Alto Amazonas, a finales del siglo XVII y principios del siglo XVIII. La carta fue redactada por pedido de sus superiores jerárquicos en 1721, después de que se retiró de la región, contra su voluntad, bajo la presión de los portugueses. Es indudable que el informe contenido en la carta fue solicitado por la importancia de su testimonio en las disputas fronterizas de ese momento y tal vez por eso no fue incluida en el Diario de Samuel Fritz (1889), que recopilaba todas sus cartas e informes. Se incluye aquí la versión facsimilar de la carta, junto con su transcripción y una nota introductoria de Jean Pierre Goulard.

We print here an unpublished letter of Samuel Fritz, a German-born Jesuit missionary, who worked in the Upper Amazon region from the end of the 17th Century to the beginning of the 18th Century. This letter was written by demand from his hierarchical superiors in 1721, after he had left the region, against his will, under the pressure of the Portuguese. There is no doubt that the report contained in the letter was requested due to the importance of his testimony in the border disputes of that time, and perhaps because of this, it was not published in the Diario de Samuel Fritz (1889), where all his letters and reports were collected. We include here the facsimile of the original letter, together with its transcription and an introduction by Jean Pierre Goulard.
