Summary
Abstract. Professional ballet is practiced worldwide and with vast cultural impact, as an art in which “the body translates into motion what the person is, what he thinks, feels and perceives”. The lack of census of ballet dancers in Colombia, as well as the lack studies in the academic literature, makes it difficult to understand the role of the physiotherapist in the holistic care of ballet dancers. Therefore, a mixed phenomenological study was carried out with emphasis that seeks to identify the relationship between the perception of body image and somatotype characteristics in Colombian professional ballet dancers. Sixteen professional dancers, (6 men), ages 18 to 35 years old participated in this study. There following assessment techniques were conducted: the corpograma (Graphical representation of own body), the interview, the full body scan with 3D Body Scanner and the manual measurements were performed according to protocol ISAK; for exploration of body image, perceptual, cognitive-affective and behavioral, and performance characterization of the dancer’s somatotype aspects respectively. Which is evidenced by the results of the somatotype group where there is a predominance of endomorph component (mainly women), compared with practical requirements of ectomorphic and mesomorphic type. That compliance with the standard is a factor that generates greater competition among dancers, as more demanding in terms of weight. The lower limbs were the areas with the highest % of injury and at the lowest % as taste area. The male dancers are closer to the identified physical standard. It was found that standards for the practice of Ballet influence the concept of body and image of the dancers, and provide them with a framework for comparison against its corporeal reality. Somatotype performs the characterization and comparison of the perception of body image of the dancers, it is essential for designing examination strategies, evaluation, and intervention closer to their real needs in the context of the Colombian reality; however, further studies in the future that will expand the research field from physiotherapy. To expand the vision of professionals in physiotherapy, face the reality of the classic ballet dancers (also professionals in human body movement) from the perspective of body image. Keywords
