COLOMBIA INSULAR: CONSTRUCCIÓN DE IDENTIDAD Y MOVILIZACIÓN DEL PUEBLO RAIZAL DEL ARCHIPIÉLAGO DE SAN ANDRÉS Y PROVIDENCIA

Abstract

En numerosas regiones del mundo, las diferencias culturales y las tensiones con el Estado central han llevado a que minorías étnicas subnacionales se movilicen en busca de su independencia. Sin embargo, en el archipiélago de San Andrés y Providencia estas circunstancias no han conducido a que los nativos raizales conformen un movimiento separatista fuerte. Sostengo que la forma en que se ha dado su relación con el Estado les ha generado a éstos un conflicto identitario, el cual impide que se consolide una oposición radical contra la soberanía colombiana. Además, la ausencia de formas de autogobierno y la dependencia para el sostenimiento económico hacen que el separatismo no se perfile como un motivo contundente de movilización entre la población raizal.

In many regions of the world, cultural differences and political tensions with the state have led ethnic minorities to mobilize for the secession of their territories. However, in the archipelago of San Andrés y Providencia these circumstances have not led the native raizal people to form a separatist movement. I argue that the relationship between the state and the raizal people has created an identity conflict in the latter, hindering the consolidation of radical opposition to Colombian sovereignty. Furthermore, the absence of self-governing institutions as well as the dependence for economic sustenance prevents separatism from being a strong cause for collective action.
