Fragmentos para el análisis crítico de una relación hispano-cubana en torno a la educación física y el deporte (1808-1898)

Abstract

A partir de varias noticias sobre la gimnástica y el deporte en Cuba durante el siglo XIX (1808-1898) desvelamos las relaciones de este país con España. Nos fijamos en el contexto de la crisis finisecular española y consideramos las huellas de una educación física escolar y militar, que junto al deporte, participan de la idealización de un mito regeneracionista que encubre el horror y las perversiones de una sociedad que a sí misma se llamaba modernista y civilizada.

Based on several news items about gymnastics and sport in Cuba in the nineteenth century (1808-1898) we disclose the relations of this country with Spain. Specifically we look at the turn of the century crisis in Spain and consider the marks of school physical education and military practice which, together with sport, form part of the idealisation of the regenerationist myth which covers the terror and perversions of a society which, at the same time, describes itself as modernist and civilised.
