Their specialized behavior and habitat preferences place them squarely in high-risk areas. This has led to the hammerhead shark’s recent listing as a globally threatened species. Successful implementation of management strategies requires adequate information on movements and habitat use. This study aims to determine the movement patterns as well as the horizontal distribution of hammerhead sharks in the Malpelo area of Colombia, using satellite telemetry. A Hidden Markov Model (HMM) will be used to uncover latent state behaviors, determine if habitat characteristics influence behavioral states, and evaluate behaviors, residency, and horizontal movements. Quantifying shark distribution patterns and species-specific habitat associations in response to geographic and environmental factors is critical for assessing the risk of exposure to fisheries, habitat degradation, and the effects of climate change. The data provided by Fundación Malpelo y otros ecosistemas marinos was used thanks to the agreement Nº 307 of 2021, agreement of direction of degree work between Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Facultad de Ciencias (Sede Bogotá) and Fundación Malpelo y Otros Ecosistemas Marinos.
