dc.description.abstract | anorexia-cachexia syndrome associated with cancer is characterized
by weight loss, loss of appetite, asthenia, and nausea, among other symptoms. Its
prevalence is high, especially in gastrointestinal cancer, and conventional therapies
often have side effects, which is why acupuncture has been considered as a
therapeutic alternative. The aim of this scoping review was to explore the evidence
on the effects of acupuncture on this topic. Materials and methods: this study
corresponded to a scoping review. Electronic searches were performed in Pubmed,
EMBASE, LILACS, Science Direct, Cochrane Library, BVS MTCI Americas, Korean
Medical Article Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure, among
others. The list of results was reviewed in several phases, articles were selected and
data extraction was performed. Results: 498 articles were obtained, of which six
met eligibility criteria: one corresponded to a feasibility study, one to a randomized
controlled trial and four to pilot studies. The use of acupuncture is feasible and safe,
although the evidence is limited with multiple methodological flaws. Only one study
reported ear pain as an adverse event. Conclusions: the present review points out
the feasibility and safety of acupuncture in anorexia-cachexia syndrome associated
with cancer; However, the evidence is scarce, preliminary and heterogeneous.
Studies with greater methodological rigor, standardization in processes and a larger
sample size are required to confirm the effects. The use of acupuncture in the
context of evidence-based practice is suggested. |
