dc.description.abstract | La presente investigación busca analizar los procesos cognitivos relacionados con la creación de categorías fonológicas para inglés como L2 por parte de aprendices tardíos nativos de español. Para esto se toman como principales referentes teóricos a 3 modelos de aprendizaje de la fonología en una segunda lengua: primero, el modelo imán de la lengua materna (NLM); segundo, el modelo de aprendizaje de habla (SLM); tercero, el modelo de asimilación perceptiva (PAM). Estos modelos coinciden en que para considerar un hablante como competente es necesario que perciba y produzca de forma adecuada, por eso, esta investigación realiza una medición objetiva de estas habilidades en una población de diez hablantes bilingües con edades comprendidas entre los 18 y los 30 años, de dominancia diestra, con español como lengua materna e inglés como L2, quienes aprendieron su L2 en edades posteriores a la adolescencia. La producción se evalúa mediante el análisis acústico del espectrograma de algunas vocales generadas ante diferentes tareas como denominación o lectura de palabras y pseudopalabras, técnicas que han sido ampliamente utilizadas en los estudios de fonología en segunda lengua. La percepción es evaluada a través del análisis fisiológico mediante la medición de la dirección de la primera fijación y la duración de las fijaciones medidas con el Eye Tracking en pruebas de discriminación auditiva con pares mínimos vocálicos como estímulos. Esta técnica permite identificar el grado de atención que se le da a determinado estímulo. Finalmente, se realiza una correlación entre el análisis acústico, el análisis, fisiológico y las pruebas conductuales con el fin de determinar si se han creado nuevas categorías para las vocales del inglés como L2. dc.description.abstract | This research aims to analyze the cognitive processes related to the creation of phonological categories for English as a second language (L2) by late learners who are native Spanish speakers. For this purpose, the study draws primarily on three theoretical models of second language phonological learning: first, the Native Language Magnet Model (NLM); second, the Speech Learning Model (SLM); and third, the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM). These models agree that for a speaker to be considered competent, they must be able to perceive and produce speech accurately. Therefore, this research conducts an objective measurement of these abilities in a population of ten bilingual speakers aged 18 to 30, all right-handed, with Spanish as their native language and English as their L2, who learned their L2 after adolescence. Production is evaluated through acoustic analysis of the spectrogram of certain vowels generated in response to tasks such as naming or reading words and pseudowords—techniques widely used in second language phonology studies. Perception is assessed through physiological analysis, measuring the direction of the first fixation and the duration of fixations using Eye Tracking in auditory discrimination tests with minimal vowel pairs as stimuli. This technique allows for the identification of the degree of attention given to a particular stimulus. Finally, a correlation is made between the acoustic analysis, the physiological analysis, and the behavioral tests in order to determine whether new categories for English L2 vowels have been created. |

dc.description.methods | La investigación se enmarca en el paradigma cuantitativo, con un diseño experimental que permite un análisis y comparación de los datos obtenidos a través de las distintas pruebas. Además, para el análisis de la percepción se sigue la lógica del paradigma del mundo visual, metodología que integra el procesamiento visual con diferentes sentidos y que ha mostrado ser efectiva en el estudio de diferentes aspectos del lenguaje. |
