| dc.description.abstract | The relationship between tree diversity and forest structure is key to understanding the functioning of tropical forests and strengthening remote sensing-based monitoring strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between tree α-diversity and vertical and horizontal forest structure in tropical forests of Colombia, as well as to identify the spatial scale and set of predictors with the greatest capacity to explain its variation. To this end, 23 one-hectare permanent plots distributed across two contrasting regions, the Amazon and the Caribbean, were analyzed by integrating forest structure metrics, environmental predictors, and ecosystem functioning variables. α-diversity showed higher values and greater heterogeneity in the Amazon, whereas the Caribbean showed lower values and less internal variability. Vertical forest structure was the main predictor of α-diversity, outperforming horizontal structure metrics in explanatory capacity. The multiscale analysis showed that a 50 m buffer around the plots maximized predictive performance, highlighting the importance of matching the spatial scale of predictors with local ecological processes. Climatic gradients and ecosystem functioning variables provided complementary information, with contributions that varied according to the diversity metric evaluated. Random Forest models showed higher and more stable performance than MARS. Overall, the results highlight the value of vertical canopy structure as a robust proxy for tree α-diversity and its potential for spatial monitoring of forest biodiversity. | eng |
