Resumen
La tesis tiene como objeto el estudio de la circulación de libros en Popayán (provincia y diócesis) a partir de un análisis de bibliotecas de instituciones y corporaciones, así como de colecciones privadas que pertenecieron a vecinos y moradores que vivieron en la ciudad, provincia y diócesis entre 1750 y 1815. Un periodo que respondió a diversas rupturas tanto intelectuales como sociales y económicas que terminaron por propiciar, tanto a nivel europeo como americano, la introducción de ciertos saberes y conocimientos que, codificados en los contenidos de libros y bibliotecas, reacomodaron y reformaron los argumentos y las prácticas de los actores históricos del espacio y tiempo seleccionados como objeto de estudio. La investigación aborda las bibliotecas en su especificidad y su universalidad, en constante diálogo con las corrientes de pensamiento europeas y americanas. La perspectiva específica se ocupa de bibliotecas institucionales y personales, y posibilita una aproximación al volumen de los repositorios y a sus contenidos temáticos, siempre en relación con la vida del propietario.
El corpus documental está centrado en decenas de inventarios de libros tanto de corporaciones como hospitales, seminarios, colegios y monasterios, así como de particulares ya fueran estos funcionarios reales, clérigos, obispos y comerciantes de la ciudad de Popayán y del espacio jurisdiccional controlado desde la ciudad. Aunque estos documentos son las fuentes principales del análisis, también se incluyeron documentos oficiales de las mismas instituciones antes mencionadas, colecciones epistolares privadas de actores del periodo de la tesis, así como otra serie de documentos de otras instituciones de gobierno en el que los libros y los saberes codificados en ellos, son tratados en el marco de los proyectos de transformación académica, científica, técnica o filosófica que se estaban presentando en esta última mitad del siglo XVIII y las primeras décadas del XIX. Abstract
The thesis examines the circulation of books in Popayán (the province and diocese) through an analysis of the libraries of institutions and corporations, as well as private collections belonging to residents and inhabitants who lived in the city, province, and diocese between 1750 and 1815. This period was marked by various intellectual, social, and economic ruptures that ultimately fostered, both in Europe and the Americas, the introduction of certain forms of knowledge and learning. Encoded in the contents of books and libraries, these forms of knowledge reshaped and reconfigured the arguments and practices of the historical actors in the specific time and space selected for study.
The research approaches libraries in terms of both their particularity and their universality, in constant dialogue with European and American currents of thought. The specific perspective focuses on institutional and personal libraries and makes it possible to assess the size of these repositories and the subjects represented in their contents, always in relation to the owner’s life.
The documentary corpus is centered on dozens of book inventories belonging both to corporations—including hospitals, seminaries, colleges, and monasteries—and to private individuals, such as royal officials, clergy members, bishops, and merchants from the city of Popayán and from the jurisdictional territory governed from the city. Although these documents constitute the main sources for the analysis, the study also incorporates official documents from the aforementioned institutions, private correspondence collections belonging to actors from the period under study, and a further series of documents from other government institutions. In these sources, books and the knowledge encoded in them are examined within the framework of academic, scientific, technical, and philosophical transformation projects that were being advanced during the latter half of the eighteenth century and the first decades of the nineteenth.
