The modification of asphalt mixtures using diverse materials is an alternative that is growing. The use of materials, some of them product of industrial process waste, which can replace traditional aggregates is a technique that has been proven to be sustainable, economical and with great benefits for environmental conservation. Due to the little or no availability of traditional aggregates in some regions of the country and the absence of quarries that comply with legal and environmental provisions, replacements with this type of materials are a viable and poorly studied alternative to promote and allow the road development of the regions. This investigation consists in carrying out the mechanical evaluation of a MDC-19 mixture (according to what is established in the General Construction Specifications of the National Roads Institute), whose granulometry was modified with lightweight expanded clay aggregates, in the dimension retained in the sieve 1⁄2 ”and compacted by “kneading ”, using a gyrator compactor. Lightweight expanded clay aggregates are frequently used in the construction of civil engineering works, having a wide and well-known field of application in the manufacture of lightened hydraulic concretes. For this reason, they are manufactured for engineering finds, use in different parts of the world, mainly in Europe, Africa and Brazil. Likewise, it has been shown that "kneading" compaction more adequately replicates the compaction that is carried out in the field, which allows laboratory performance evaluations to be more precise when predicting the behavior of the mixture in the field. From the modifications made, it could be evidenced that the use of lightweight expanded clay aggregates improved the strength of the mixture, maintaining an optimal stability / flow ratio, without presenting greater variations in the deformation of the specimens evaluated. Likewise, and due to the low density of these materials, the modified mixtures presented a decrease in their density, in relation to the controlled standard sample for comparison. In terms of mechanical behavior, the selected mixture, called R50, present an optimal behavior, which is in the ranges accepted by the current regulations of the country, and it is close to the values reported for controlled standard sample. The use of this type of materials, under the conditions of this investigation, allows to obtain compatible asphalt mixtures whose performance is suitable for temperatures between 15 ° C and 30 ° C, with speeds between 20 km / hour and 60 km / hour.spa
