Para caracterizar esta tecnología, la Sociedad de Ingenieros Automotrices (The Society of Automotive Engineers ~ SAE) ha definido niveles de autonomía, donde el nivel 0 refiere a un vehículo totalmente manual, el nivel 1 un vehículo que cuenta con ciertas asistencias automáticas, y la autonomía aumenta en cada nivel hasta llegar al 5 que describe un vehículo totalmente autónomo. Varios países han hecho esfuerzos por incorporar estas innovaciones en su territorio, mediante la creación de leyes y la realización varios pilotos. Con estas experiencias se han identificado los principales retos que podría tener un país como Colombia para llevar a cabo un plan de implementación de vehículos autónomos, entre ellos las deficiencias en la infraestructura vial y la dificultad para generar confianza por parte de los usuarios. En el presente trabajo de abordan distintos aspectos relevantes a tener en cuenta para impulsar el uso de vehículos autónomos en Colombia, principalmente en el transporte público. Se inicia con un recuento normativo comparado entre algunos países pioneros en el tema, luego se muestran generalidades sobre los vehículos autónomos y se exponen diversas problemáticas alrededor de su futura incorporación en el país, para al final indagar por la aceptación de esta tecnología por parte de los usuarios. Adicionalmente, a lo largo del texto se mencionan los principales beneficios de iniciar con un cambio en la industria automotriz donde se incursione en los vehículos autónomos como la reducción de la accidentalidad y los beneficios para el ambiente. To characterize this technology, The Society of Automotive Engineers or SAE, has defined levels of autonomy, where level 0 refers to a completely manual-driving vehicle, level 1 is a vehicle the few automatic assistance, and the autonomy increases until level 5, that is described as a completely self-driving vehicle. A few countries have made efforts to incorporate this innovation in their territories, through the creation of laws and conducting pilot tests. With this experience the main challenges that a country like Colombia could have to carry out a plan for the implementation of self-driving vehicles, have been identified, among them are the deficiency in road infrastructure and the difficulty to generate trust in the users. In the present work different relevant aspects to have in mind to impulse the use of self-driving vehicles in Colombia are addressed, mainly in public transportation. We begin with a summary of the laws among a few pioneer countries in the subject, then we expose generalities about self-driving vehicles and different problems about their future incorporation in the country, and in the end, we inquire in the acceptation of this technology by the users.
