Una contribución en el proceso de reconstrucción histórica del movimiento bautista en las islas de San Andrés y Providencia entre 1845 y 1888, que, mediante la aproximación al liderazgo de su primer misionero y gestión de la iglesia, busca identificar los elementos constitutivos que hicieron viable los procesos de manumisión, educación e inmersión de los pobladores isleños en las nuevas realidades económicas. Cambios en los que si bien es cierto la iglesia tuvo un papel relevante, no fueron ajenos a las dinámicas geopolíticas de la región caribe y el mundo occidental en aquel momento. Aquellos sectores sociales marginados por siglos, a partir de la gestión misionera y los cambios acaecidos en el archipiélago, lograron convertirse en actores libres, miembros de una comunidad religiosa que los acogió y llevó a convertirlos en protagonistas de una historia cuyo trasfondo anglo-caribeño contribuyó también en darle forma a su base identitaria, marcada por la influencia del protestantismo. Formación cultural que resultó tan ajena a los centros de poder del interior colombiano, cuyos gobiernos, más allá de su orientación política y marcados en mayor o menor medida por un trasfondo hispano-católico no lograron en el siglo XIX materializar una presencia efectiva en las islas. Ya fuera la indiferencia, abandono, incapacidad administrativa o distancia geográfica, lo cierto es que hasta la puesta en marcha de la Regeneración, la ausencia estatal a lo largo del siglo XIX, terminó dificultando el establecimiento del catolicismo, la materialización de la instrucción pública y la implementación de cualquier política económica y social en las islas. Fue esta realidad la que al mismo tiempo favoreció el trabajo de los bautistas desde su establecimiento y a lo largo de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, llevándole a convertirse en un importante agente de control social. Los pocos documentos de la iglesia permiten conocer aspectos relevantes del trabajo misional y de las islas en general durante este periodo. Asimismo, los testimonios orales transmitidos por generaciones y la percepción actual de sus habitantes frente a su propia historia, se constituyen en fuentes que han permitido tejer este pasado isleño que finalizando el siglo XIX empezó a experimentar los embates tras la implementación del proyecto de colombianización y asimilación cultural planteado por la Regeneración. A contribution to the process of historical reconstruction of the Baptist movement on the islands of San Andrés and Providencia between 1845 and 1888, which, by approaching the leadership of its first missionary and church management, seeks to identify the constituent elements that made viable the processes of manumission, education and immersion of the islanders in the new economic realities. Changes in which, although it is true, the church played an important role, were not unrelated to the geopolitical dynamics of the Caribbean region and the Western world. Those social sectors marginalized for centuries, from the missionary management and the changes that occurred in the archipelago, managed to become free actors, members of a religious community that welcomed them and led them to become protagonists of a story whose Anglo-Caribbean background contributed also in shaping its identity base, marked by the influence of Protestantism. Cultural formation that was so alien to the centers of power in the Colombian interior, whose governments, beyond their political orientation and marked to a greater or lesser extent by a Hispanic-Catholic background, failed to materialize an effective presence on the islands in the 19th century. Whether it was indifference, abandonment, administrative incapacity or geographical distance, the truth is that until the start of the Regeneration, the state's absence throughout the 19th century ended up making it difficult for the establishment of Catholicism, the materialization of public education and the implementation of any economic and social policy on the islands. It was this reality that at the same time favored the work of Baptists from their establishment and throughout the second half of the 19th century and led them to become an important agent of social control. The few documents of the church allow us to know relevant aspects of the missionary work and of the islands in general during this period.
