La referencia al pueblo bajo, al populacho, los ruana es, especialmente, despectiva. Personas de las élites ilustradas se “juntan” con el pueblo bajo, más por necesidad política, que por admiración. At the time of the Independence of the Nueva Granada (today Colombia), the poor people –man and women-, participated politically by going out ti the streest, demanding an open town hall, shouting. Participation that was definitive to take the first steps towards the new political community called the Republic. The letters of the Agustín and José Gregorio Gutiérrez Moreno brothers (1808- 1816) and the press of the time, give an account of this participation. The reference to the poor people, the populace, the ruana is, especially, derogatory.
