El hipocampo es una estructura cerebral compacta, alargada y curva , descrita por primera vez por el anatomista del siglo XVI Giulio Cesare Aranzio quien hizo una semejanza con la forma del caballito de mar . El hipocampo pertenece al sistema límbico y desempeña un papel importante en la memoria y el aprendizaje, además es una de las estructuras cerebrales donde ocurre un fenómeno único del cerebro humano, y es la neurogénesis, formacion de nuevas neuronas, proceso que resulta afectado en enfermedades como el Alzheimer. El objetivo de este trabajo es realizar una revisión de literatura de la morfología del hipocampo profundizando en sus características microscópicas, con ayuda de la descripción de algunas placas histológicas del mismo, y así realizar una correlación con el papel funcional del hipocampo.
