dc.description.abstract | Abstract. The Experimental philosophy of Robert Boyle has been interpreted as an important instance in the history of the emergence of modern science. However, many of the elements involved in his work such as his prudence in developing explanatory theories, his attachment to experimentation, the close relationship of his natural philosophy with his religious ideas, and the little development of mathematical tools makes his proposal show a very different path from the one offered by the modern notion of science. Given this, it is argued these three specific ideas in this work: i) the experimental methodology developed by Boyle demands the development of evidence experiments that can generate a mechanical explanation of a phenomenon, but it also requires conducting exploratory experiments that merely explore the diversity of nature. ii) Boyle's experimental philosophy should be understood in close connection with the work in natural history developed in his last stage of investigation. It is this types of work which best manifests the scope of the experiment as a key tool for understanding the natural world. iii) The natural histories are works where Boyle develops an autonomous experimentation; here the goal is not to confirm but to explore the complex mechanisms of secondary qualities as cold, heat, color, etc. |
