Retrotransposon Ty3/gypsy-like sequences were identified in the genomes of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) and several other Lycopersicon species by PCR analysis. The sequences were highly heterogeneous, as has been the case Analysis of sequences amplified by PCR showed that the phylogeny of the tomato Ty3/gypsy sequences was similar to that of the genus Lycopersicon. This analysis also showed that the sequences belong to slowly changing retrotransposon sequences and that they seem to be long time residents of the tomato genome. Some evidence was obtained that suggests that some Ty3/gypsy-like elements in tomato might be active. The lines of evidence in favour of the presence of active retrotransposons in tomato and their possible horizontal transmission are further discussed.
