The Saldana Formation, the upper part of the Payandé Group, constitutes the economic basement over a great area of the Upper Magdalena Valley in the southern part of Colombia. Paleogeographic reconstruction at pre-cretaceous time provides important clues about the litological properties of the overlying prospective rocks and on their reservoir capabilities. The paleogeomorphologic characteristics of the economic basement are a consequence of long-time weathering and erosion processes on the Payandé Group rocks, during most of Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous time. During this period intensive tectonic activity took place which mainly led to faulting and tilted-blocks. These structural features constituted the framework of pre-cretaceous morphology. Un this surface, the Yaví and Caballos Formations (respectively continental to shallow marine and terrestial-lagunar to litoral) were deposited and represent the inicial stages of the cretaceous transgression wich began during Aptian-Albian time in the Upper Magdalena Valley. The Yavi Formation was considered to be the uppermost part of the Saldaña Formation representing the end of the jurassic volcanic-sedimentary cycle. However, new observations by Mojica and amp; Macía (1982,1983) show that when the Yaví Formation is present it actually makes up the base of the cretaceous sedimentary sequence.Palabras clave
