Abstract. This thesis analyzes Trilce (1922) by Cesar Vallejo on two different aspects. For years it has been suggested by the literature critics that this book of poems is the cornerstone of Latin American avant-garde, connecting Cesar Vallejo’s work to the European avantgarde. The first part of the thesis opposes this linkage, as the focus on the aspect of avant-garde neglects the importance of abstruseness in Trilce. The critics have failed to consider Vallejo’s personal stance, opposing the ideas of the European avant-garde, and have consequently linked him to the avant-garde poetry, although the poet himself has actually embarked on a personal attempt to arrive at “new humanism” based on “authentic poetry”. The second part of the thesis analyzes “the negativity of language”: different rhetorical devices, employed in the poems. The phrasing fails to provide meaning, while the words fail to create semantic significance, as a result of which abstruseness is formed. The thesis proposes that Trilce belongs to the movement known as the "crisis of language", where the erosion of communication prevails and silence appears as the only option, to which the poet is bound.Palabras clave
