Abstract. The Matachin Norte and Matachin Sur fields are located in the Espinal Block, Northeast of Girardot sub-basin, is a mountain range delimited by the Prado thrust, 14.5 km from Purificacion town, Upper Magdalena Valley Basin. In general terms, the fields correspond to a subthrust structural trap. The MN and MS fields are very similar in their structural configuration, but the structural configuration of the reservoir is more complex in MS, where it is common to find vertical and overturned layers, as a result of a imbricate stack, developed by the propagation of the Venganza fault, meanwhile the MN field consists of a slightly asymmetric anticline in the footwall of the Venganza fault; there is not presence of imbricate stack in this field. The objective of this study is to establish the geometry and kinematic evolution of the sector that separates the Matachines fields, because there is no a complete clarity about the geological mechanism which gave rise to the differences in the configuration, structural relief and separation of the fields. Different hypotheses as the development of a structural chair, back-thrusting of Monicongo fault and the development of a tear fault between the two fields have been postulated. In order to test these hypotheses, the following methodology was developed: i) review of the geological and topographic maps of the sector ii) interpretation of satellite images and aerial photographs, iii) interpretation of local and regional seismic lines and iv) use of seismic attributes to identify key structural features. This dissertation considers that the sector which separates the two fields, has structural characteristics of a transverse zone, called Intra Matachines transverse zone (ZoTIM), in which some major structural features are observed: i) the progressive plunging of the Venganza fault plane, and the layers of the reservoir to the south, ii) development of a structural chair between both fields, iii) change of orientation toward the Western of the uppermost part of MN field with respect to the MS field. A detailed analysis of each structural element revealed that this transverse zone corresponds to an ancient pre-existing subvertical normal fault, transverse and involving basement, where the changes along the strike correspond to a transpressive component that took place in the tectonosedimenty history of the area.
