dc.description.abstract | Abstract. The scientific relativism is the view that the criteria for choosing between competing scientific theories are internal to the theories themselves, that is, there are not objective criteria of choice. Relativism, in the twentieth century, was based on the idea of incommensurability between scientific theories. This notion of incommensurability implies a vision of knowledge representationalist manifested in three theses: 1) there are not alternative conceptual schemes, 2) experience plays a role epistemic and is loaded theoretically and 3) competing theories languages are untranslatable. Donald Davidson criticizes relativism through a systematic attack on these three theses. The possibility of defending a scientific relativism that do not compromise with any of these three theses and therefore reject the knowledge representationalist image is scanned. This relativism rests on the notion of 'internal network' (set of beliefs whose truth and justification conditions does not go beyond the network itself). Internal networks must satisfy two conditions, namely, they must be empirically underdetermined (must be compatible with experience but inconsistent each other) and must be doxastically underdetermined (must be consistent with a background of beliefs shared although incompatible). If both conditions are met, there is non-representationalist relativism. |
