dc.description.abstract | Abstract: During the last two decades of the nineteenth century the short story became one of the most popular literary genres in English Literature. The characteristics of the short story, such as the brevity, the intensity, the fragmentation, the flexibility and the introspection encouraged many writers to consider the short story as a proper instrument for experimentation and technical innovation. Women writers contributed deeply to the popularity of this literary genre, as they wrote many short stories of high quality. This article analyses the possible causes of this literary phenomenon deepening on the relationship between the nature of the short story and feminine creativity showing as examples some of the works by the British writer George Egerton (1859-1945) and the American writers Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935) and Kate Chopin (1850-1904). |
