Abstract. This study on the unconventional practices and perception of the innovative motherhood role in the city of Cartagena de Indias used ten case histories from a group of women/mothers. Through these histories we are able to understand the construction and formation of the woman/mother gender identity, and how this has influenced the development of new practices and ideas in the promotion and fight for equality between women and men. We are also able to detect and understand how a new concept of motherhood has been created despite the traditional practices found in Cartagena’s society, which are characterized by culpability, sacrifice, and the rejection or restriction of social, working, economical, political and cultural opportunities. The main characters of these case histories have overcome milestones that have marked their cases; these milestones have caused transformation in their lives, which not only have affected themselves and their families, but also their daily lives and some other relationships they have formed. The identity of these revolutionary women/mothers has been formed and created through unconventional and new ways; these women are able to revolutionize and change their roles as women and mothers in society through the rejection, opposition and transgression of the traditional woman/mother role in Cartagena’s society against the strong cultural opposition which exists in the city. As these women progress and are able to alter their role in society they will be able to change and redefine themselves as women and mothers. Implicating that through having a self preservation attitude, and learning from their own life experiences, they will be able to continue transforming the meaning and practice of motherhood in Cartagena’s society; only then they will be in the way to accomplish and further explore a social and personal legitimate acceptance.Palabras clave
