Manejo ortopédico de la disfunción temporomandibular en niños: revisión de la literatura

Abstract

Existen pocos reportes de la disfunción temporomandibular en niños, a pesar de los intentos en profundizar sobre la diversidad de patologías que pueda tener la articulación temporomandibular, ATM, en la infancia es necesario investigar si las influencias internas y externas deben ser tenidas en cuenta al momento de realizar un buen diagnóstico para posteriormente realizar un adecuado plan de tratamiento; este último puede ser realizado mediante fuerzas ortopédicas sobre la ATM por medio de aparatos funcionales, influyendo en la interacción del cóndilo mandibular y la fosa glenoidea. El objetivo de este artículo es realizar una revisión de literatura acorde a los trastornos temporomandibulares que afectan la población infantil y las opciones terapéuticas a nivel ortopédico que puedan ayudar en dichas disfunciones. Como conclusión se plantea que el uso de aparatos de Ortopedia Funcional parece tener un impacto positivo en el tratamiento de las disfunciones temporomandibulares en los pacientes en crecimiento; sin embargo, la investigación debe continuar.
