dc.description.abstract | Abstract: Objective: Establishing the variations in lymphocyte subpopulations Th17 ("regulators" (CD4+, CD161+, CD25+) and the "effectors" (CD4+, CD161+, CD25 - ) in peripheral blood, from systematically healthy patients with or without aggre ssive periodontal disease. Materials and methods: A peripheral blood sample was taken from six (6) systematically healthy patients: Three (3) periodontally healthy patients, and three (3) diagnosed with aggressive periodontitis. Later, antibodies Anti - CD 3, Anti - CD4, Anti - CD161, and Anti CD25 were added to the blood samples. Finally, the samples underwent Flow Cytometry, and the results obtained were analyzed using the Mann Whitney Test. Results: The laboratory findings showed increased levels of Th17 (CD 4+, CD161+) cells, and higher percentages of regulator subpopulation Th17 (CD4+, CD161+, CD25+) in patients with aggressive periodontitis than in patients from the control group. On the other hand, the effector subpopulation (CD4+, CD161+, CD25) showed sta ble levels for both groups. However, these results are non - statistically significant (P= 0.4 , 0.7 y 1.00 respectively). Conclusions: Even though the results are non - statistically significant, there is prove that the role of Th17 cells in aggressive perio dontitis is regulatory and not pathological. Also, it is necessary to use a larger sample to confirm those results. |
