Abstract: Since the mid-twentieth century, different studies and methods have been developed in order to determine the orientation of the main stress axes through the analysis of fault geometries. The analysis and inversion of focal mechanisms (MF) has also become a common technique to determine the state of stress in different regions of the world. In 2013, seismic activity began to be recorded in the surroundings of the Chiles-Cerro Negro Volcanic Complex (CVCCN), located on the border between Colombia and Ecuador. For this study, we calculated and analyzed 716 focal mechanisms with magnitudes MLbetween 0 and 3.87, and depth between 0 and 15 km reported in the catalog of earthquakes of the Volcanological Observatory of Pasto (SGC-OVSP) and the Institute of Geophysics of Ecuador (IGEPN), in the vicinity of the Chiles-Cerro Negro Volcanic Complex (CVCCN) during the years 2013 -2015. We select 405 MF that met quality criteria and showed variability of solutions, the inversion of stress tensor was made through the Focal Mechanism Stress Inversion method (FMSI) (Gephart and Forsyth, 1984) and Linear Stress Inversion by Bootstrapping method (LSIB) (Michael, 1984) and the cumulative misfit analysis to identify homogeneous stress zoneswith at least 95% confidence in time and space. The estimate of stress directions, resulted in a mainly compressive regime with inverse faults and occasionally strike slip fults, and an regime change (extensive regime) between 6.0 km and 15.0 km depth and in the period December 13, 2014 -October 26, 2015, possibly caused by the pressure exerted by the magmatic chamber, this may indicate that the seismic swarms in the CVCCN are governed mainly by local tectonics for the period 2013-2015.
