Introduction: Exposure of infants to toxic metals, such as lead and cadmium is of special interest. Mothers previously exposed to these contaminants can transmit them during lactation. The objective of this study was to identify the exposure factors related to the levels of lead and cadmium in breast milk in samples from a hospital in Bogotá 2019. Methodology: Were collected 50 samples of breast milk according to the guidelines established by the WHO. We conducted a survey to identify possible exposure factors related to lead and cadmium contamination. The milk samples were analyzed for the presence of lead and cadmium by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results: We report a statistical relationship between the concentration of cadmium in breast milk with the occupation of the mother and a statistical relationship between the concentration of lead in breast milk with the type of affiliation to the mother's health system, and the consumption of chocolate. The prevalence of lead and cadmium levels in breast milk in the sample studied was 10% for lead, and 8% for cadmium. Conclusion: This study is the first in Colombia to report and quantify lead and cadmium contamination in breast milk, in addition to identifying exposure factors related to lead and cadmium levels, our results highlight the need to develop strategies to limit exposure and contamination to these toxic metals. Keywords: Human Milk, Toxicology, Lead, Cadmium.
