dc.description.abstract | Although the Colombian Orinoco River Basin (CORIB) accounts for 3/4 of Colombia’s oil production, most of CORIB is still not connected to the national electrical grid, and the pipeline infrastructure does not reach the majority of oil fields. Therefore, a significant percentage of the power required for oil production is generated in situ, and an important fraction of the produced oil is transported by truck to distant pipeline collection and pumping facilities. Moreover, a large percentage of the connecting roads are unpaved, which enhances the resuspension emissions, and most of the Colombian ORIB oil fields produce heavy oil associated with large amounts of water (water/oil volume ratio 17). The Colombian law requires that the extracted water is treated prior disposal or reinjection (e.g. for pressure maintenance). In situ power production and road transport are essentially diesel powered, and generate substantial amounts of greenhouse gases and particles. In this investigation we estimated 1) the energy required for oil production in CORIB, including water reinjection; 2) the road transport activity levels; and 3) the resulting PM10 emissions, based on simplified first-principles mathematical models and decision algorithms. Activity level information was rather difficult to obtain (partially confidential) and process (not fully standardized). We collected information of year 2016, during which 674 kBPD of oil and 12 MBPD of water were produced in CORIB, mostly by small fields (0.1-1 kBPD). The production and transport statistics, and the resulting spatially disaggregated energy consumption and PM10 emissions will be presented. |
