dc.description.abstract | Introduction: During the perioperative period, errors related to the use of medicines stand as one of the main causes of adverse events and accidents. To prevent these accidents and promote a safe use of medicines, it is crucial to identify and classify these errors. Objective: To analyze errors related to the use of medicines before, during, and after sedation with general anesthesia for abdominal surgeries in a Colombian level-IV hospital in Bogotá. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study in which the use of medicines was observed during the perioperative period of 390 patients from January to September during 2019. Results: In the study, 3,677 events in which patients received medications were observed. In 60% of these events, at least one error happened. From these errors, 59% were identified during emergency procedures. The anesthetics pharmacological group was the more closely related, with 32%. The higher percentage of errors, 52%, had a classification type A in the NCC MERP. Finally, no adverse event was identified. Conclusions: All spotted errors were determined as events with potential for harm. This statement highlights the necessity of promoting a culture of health care safety and a standardization of the practices that occur during the use of medicines, in order to avoid any adverse event. Keywords: Medication errors, Operating room, Patient safety, adverse drug event. |
