La simbología de lo monstruoso en los libros de caballerías españoles

Abstract

This work seeks to trace the figure and the concept of the monster present in the Spanish chivalric books written between 1508 and 1587 based on their different representations, with special emphasis on five chivalric books. The proposed objectives are: on the one hand, to show and analyze the monstrous species present in chivalric books, with their antecedents in the Greek tradition and European travel books; on the other hand, to demonstrate that the variety and use of such monsters in the literary genre that corresponds to the books of Spanish chivalry responds to behavioral models, to a changing concept of alterity, to a specific notion of the monster and to the characterization of the other.

Este trabajo buscar rastrear la figura y el concepto propios del monstruo presente en los libros de caballerías españoles escritos entre 1508 y 1587 a partir de sus diferentes representaciones, haciendo énfasis especialmente en cinco libros de caballerías. Los objetivos propuestos son: por un lado, mostrar y analizar las especies monstruosas presentes en los libros de caballerías, con sus antecedentes en la tradición griega y los libros de viajes europeos; por otro lado, demostrar que la variedad y uso de tales monstruos en el género literario que corresponde a los libros de caballerías españoles responde a unos modelos de comportamiento, a un concepto cambiante de alteridad, a una noción específica del monstruo y de caracterización de lo otro.
