In the last three decades, environmental management has become a central issue in the business world, due to the need to respond to the requirements of different stakeholders (e.g. regulators, NGOs, consumers). For this reason, the analysis of the impact of environmental practices on economic performance has been widely addressed in the literature, under a "win-win" approach, in which environmental and economic objectives can be achieved simultaneously. However, given the multi-faceted and complex nature of the relationships between economic and environmental performance, trade-offs are the rule rather than the exception, and therefore the need to study this relationship under a trade-off approach has been evidenced in the literature. In response to this need, this paper aims to study the emergence of trade-offs between environmental and economic performance in the context of the implementation of a reverse logistics system as well as the effect of environmental collaboration with customers and suppliers in the management of such trade-offs. This is done through the development of an agent-based simulation model based on the case of Red Verde's post-consumption management of refrigerators in Colombia. Finally, the results of the model show that the implementation of the Red Verde post-consumption program brings with it high costs, mainly in advertising, transportation and treatment, which negatively impact economic performance while substantially reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Likewise, from the results it can be concluded that the collaboration allows turning trade-offs into win-win situations.
