dc.description.abstract | Atmospheric electrical discharges are a high frequency phenomenon and are characterized by carrying high currents. Lightning strikes frequently occur anywhere in the world. According to several studies, the regions of the terrestrial tropics are areas with a higher density of lightnings, due to several factors, such as: greater exposure to solar radiation, topography, frequency of rains, etc. The previous hypothesis was determined with the measurement of electric and magnetic fields that occur when exist an electrical storm, however, the implementation of these technologies has a high cost of acquisition and maintenance. This thesis presents the analysis of a set of lightning records that occurred mainly in the Santander region in Colombia. Also, this document presents a discussion about different techniques for information processing. To understand the study, initially the measurement and information of the lightning detection and location networks called CTLDS and COLMA are presented. Also, the advantages and disadvantages of measurement networks are named. Thanks to the databases with lightning measurements, it was possible to analyze the distribution of 6 million strokes in the study area, likewise, it was possible to compare the temporal parameters and error of the measurement equipment. During this project, a comparison was made of 473 CG strokes records and 38,702 sources of leaders measured during a severe storm in November 2018. The storm lasted approximately eight hours. The comparisons made it possible to identify the lightning propagation processes measured by each detection technique and showed that the CTDLs network detected more than 64 % of the COLLMA flashes. It was also calculated that 32 % of the flashes detected by the COLLMA network have at least one cloud-to ground return strokes accompanied by IC return strokes and in 91 % of the cases the location precision is less than 5 km . On the other hand, a methodology is proposed that uses computational algorithms for Hotspot clustering. Hotspots are areas with high lightning density. The methodology was verified in the analysis of a database of lightning strikes that occurred in a period of seven years (2012 to 2018). For the analysis, it was necessary to group in records of lightning strikes per month. Finally, the evaluation of lightning strikes on elevated structures is presented. The possibility of lightning impact on structures located in the study region was evaluated. |
