These institutions record, verify, and occasionally arbitrage all kind of transactions and accords among companies and people in general. In the energy sector, the upcoming new paradigm of a distributed grid has been fueled by evolving renewable energy, such revolution has pushed authorities to de-regulate energy markets by allowing prosumers and utilities to pursue a flexible, more transparent and more competitive energy ecosystem. However new challenges arise for regulators in order to control, keep track and settle the surging number of transactions among all these new agents. In this regard, Distributed Ledger Technologies offer new solutions for the record keeping, management and integrity security of these transactions. This work aims to review formal literature around blockchain as a particular case of distributed ledger technology, counting for challenges and opportunities for the development of blockchain at the Colombian energy market.
