The subjective/familial experience of madness and the meanings of its social bonds constitute the general framework of the research. In this regard, the exploration of related research trends allowed the identification of a historical silencing where, despite the exaltation of a discourse of rights, the idea of a voice lacking reason in madness has prevailed. However, the examination of the felt experience has been positioning itself as an imperative in the humanization of the field of study, the extensive silencing has begun to give way to an authentic concern for incorporating the subjective dimension in the understanding and treatment of insanity. The ways in which families position themselves in the face of the experience of insanity trigger changes in family ties, affections and the meanings of the familiar concept, validated and oriented by the cultural dimension and by a widely legitimized knowledge, that of psychiatric diagnosis. In parallel, the diagnosed person also experiences these changes by reconfiguring interpretations, beliefs and emotions. Investigating these tensions implied recognizing the contextual determinants that contain them, that is, the network of historical interdependence between the family organization and the cultural social dimension. This exercise allowed us to conclude that the experience of madness does not occur exclusively within a body, it is in essence and from the first moment a relational experience that is intertwined with a deep intensity with the family and in which the whole relational and institutional framework converges to mark its course with the potential to aggravate or ameliorate the related discomfort.Palabras clave
