Distraction is a regulation strategy belonging to the family of attentional deployment that acts early in the modulation and consists of diverting perceptual resources to elements that present low salience. On the other hand, it has been proposed that difficulty in emotion regulation underlies different mood disorders and differences have been described between men and women regarding the prevalence of these conditions. The present study implemented the event-related potentials technique to identify sex differences in the amplitude of the Late Positive Potential produced by the presentation of aversive stimuli to which a distractor was introduced. Additionally, this same indicator was analyzed in a re-exposure stage in which the same images were projected, but without the distractor element. The results showed that the implementation of the distraction during the visualization of the aversive images produced decreases in the amplitude of the LPP in participants of both sexes from early stages of the component when compared to the amplitudes produced by aversive stimuli without the distractor element. In the re-exposure phase, images previously presented with the distraction produced greater amplitudes than those previously presented without distraction in both sexes. The results highlight the effectiveness of distraction as a strategy to down-modulate emotional responding during the presentation of aversive stimuli showing similar effectiveness in males and females.
