dc.description.abstract | The vehicle wheel aligners are amongst the most used devices in the automotive industry to prevent, correct and improve vehicle stability. Modern cars generally have alignments for both the front and rear wheels and consist of three measurements: Toe, Camber, and Caster. These wheel alignments will gradually change during use and could cause problems if not properly timed and aligned, such as inconsistent front wheel rocking while driving, steering wheel vibration, decreased directional stability, rapid tire wear, etc. Tire wear is part of the global transportation cost factors that must be taken into account in economic calculations, it also has an impact on energy consumption and the environment. Therefore, an examination and adjustment of the wheel alignments must be carried out to restore the vehicle's drive. It is intended to build a compact device in order to simplify the current alignment process using recurrent measurement methods, understanding the physical and mathematical behaviors of those variables and the programming of the instrument software for the development of the task. The project relates to the analysis and validation of devices with sampling technology such as inertial measurement units or IMUs, of which accelerometers, gyroscopes and magnetometers are incorporated to capture sufficient and precise information to calculate the corresponding angles and carry out the process of alignment and balancing in the automobiles. A prototype with a turntable was designed for the first calibration tests with the IMU in one of the axes, then the programming algorithm was created in Arduino to capture the measurements and perform the required calculations of the corresponding angles. Furthermore, field tests were conducted with a structured light aligner in order to compare the results and demonstrate the veracity of the device. In the final part, it is aspired to build a Stewart platform with 6 degrees of freedom for future checks and tests of the project. |
