The present doctoral thesis in history titled: “The fear of Darwinism: social Darwinism, sociological knowledge, and anti-Darwinian evolutionism in Colombia, 1872-1930”, studies the reception of Darwinism in Colombia, in the context of the emergence of the conservative Republic. of Regeneration, between the mid-19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The thesis identifies the medium, long and short duration factors of the natural sciences, the scientific and intellectual context in which Darwinism appears in Colombia, keeping in mind the prevalence of the Darwinian debate at the time, between 1872 and 1930. It is maintained that the Anticipation of the controversy generated by the readings of utilitarianism, materialism and liberalism in the works of Bentham and Tracy, as well as the news of the world debate on international Darwinism, anticipated its appearance in the United States of Colombia and It extended beyond the appearance of the Republic. It is evident that these factors forced the process of reception of Darwinism towards its rejection, generating fear and discredit of its meaning, deformed by the anticipations of the anti-Darwinian evolutionary references of Spencer and Haeckel, labeling Darwinism as an integrator of theories subordinated to anarchism and materialism, stigmatized by the intellectual, political and religious elite, since they supposedly contributed to the postulates of the liberal radicalism that was in power. Finally, it is pointed out that with these assumptions Darwinism was considered harmful because it was considered to contradict the precepts of the Catholic religion, and it became impossible for it to be taught in schools and universities in the period studied.Palabras clave
