This work evaluates the process of chemical recycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) by means of depolymerization by glycolysis with diethylene glycol (DEG) assisted by microwaves at laboratory scale in order to be used in the polyurethane industry. As a first stage, the study of different catalysts for the process was carried out, among which zinc acetate has the best results reaching a concentration of 1.2% by weight of the reaction system. In the second stage, polyester polyols were produced using zinc acetate as catalyst and varying the weight ratio between PET and DEG. Four different ratios 1:2, 1:1, 1.2;1 and 1.6:1 by weight between PET:DEG were reached with the following hydroxyl number averages: 952 , 495, 484, 387 mg KOH/g respectively; with the 1:1 ratio by weight between PET:DEG, the analysis of heating curves and establishing reaction kinetics was done together with the analysis of thermogravimetry test data (TGA). In the third stage, the formulation and production of rigid polyurethanes and polyisocyanurates using the produced polyester polyols was performed. The inclusion of the polyester polyols produced was carried out in different percentages of the formulated polyol. The mechanical properties of the produced parts were evaluated, such as compressive strength, creep deformation, dimensional stability and k-factor (which indicates how efficient the product is for thermal insulation, one of the main applications of rigid polyurethane), with positive results on the compressive strength properties with an improvement of 9.5% and on the k-factor by 9.8% with respect to the data of the reference polyurethane part without the produced polyester polyol. These results indicate that the use of produced polyester polyols in the formulation of polyurethanes is possible and help to reduce costs in the manufacture of polyurethanes.Palabras clave
