National music and the mundo al día collection: remarks on a controversy

Abstract

Between 1924 and 1938 the newspaper Mundo al Día from Bogotá published the largest collection of printed sheet music (both in terms of quantity and distribution) ever achieved by a Colombian newspaper. The Mundo al Día Collection had a strong impact on the idea of the construction of a national cultural identity through music. Since its inception, the collection was linked to a controversy around national music that occupied center stage in the cultural debate during the 20's and 30's. Many articles regarding this topic were published in Mundo al Día. The object of this article is to point out the antecedents of the controversy, its development, its incidence on Mundo al Día 's ""Collection, and its transformation during the 30's, when the newspaper went out of print.

Entre 1924 y 1938 el diario gráfico bogotano Mundo al Día editó la colección musical más extensa y de mayor circulación en el espectro de publicaciones periódicas colombianas. Mundo al Día jugó un papel central en la construcción de una identidad nacional a través de la música En sus orígenes y a lo largo de su desarrollo, la colección estuvo estrechamente ligada a la polémica en tomo a la música nacional, polémica que ocupó un lugar prominente en el debate cultural de los años veinte y treinta. Parte del intercambio de argumentos se dio en las páginas de Mundo al Día. El objetivo de este trabajo es identificar los antecedentes de la polémica, su incidencia en La Colección Mundo al día y su transformación en la década de los años treinta, cuando el periódico dejó de circular.
