Summary
Abstract. Introduction. 63% of the 36 million people with HIV in the world are active in the labor market, and little is known about what work represents for them. Objective. To understand the meanings that working has for a group of workers with HIV living in Bogotá. Methology. A qualitative, hermeneutic and interpretative study in which 11 individuals participated voluntarily and were selected under relevance and adequacy criteria. The sample was defined by theoretical saturation and data collection in-depth interviews. The analysis followed the hermeneutic technique proposed by Diekelman, Allen y Tanner. Results. For the study participants, the meaning of work when living with HIV is supported under three categories: "Employability, type of employment and time management", "Health, work and HIV" and "Social and working environment of HIV". Conclusions. HIV means a decrease in the possibilities of work, which affects the extra and intralaboral conditions of the worker, mostly because of the stigma people have about infection. It leads to discrimination actions and influences employment options. Work is a fundamental determinant in the access to health and therefore in its maintenance. Keywords
