M tool steels are hard and wear-resistant materials, so it is necessary to control the grain growth, mainly when it is obtained by powder metallurgy of super-solid liquid phase sintering (SLPS). For this reason, this master’s thesis generates the implementation of the steel fabrication process for type M tools from powders pre-alloyed by powder metallurgy. Within this work the manufacturing conditions and the influence of the atmosphere on the sintering process by conventional powder metallurgy were studied. In addition to the validation of the numerical solution of a mathematical model by comparison with experimental data. For the implementation of the steel manufacturing process for M-type tool powders pre-alloyed by powder metallurgy, it was necessary first to identify the conditions of this technique that correspond to the compaction pressure, sintering temperature, and atmosphere control. For this reason, the design of factorial 2k experiments was carried out. The analysis factors correspond to the mentioned manufacturing parameters for sintering in the liquid phase, i.e. compaction pressure and sintering temperature. The response surface of these parameters was hardness and resistance to bending. Through the analysis of variance and linear regression, it was established that a compaction pressure of 750 MPa and sintering temperature of 1300 °C obtained the highest hardness values, corresponding to 454 HV under vacuum and argon atmosphere. Meanwhile, the values of bending resistance are 1456.90 MPa under vacuum atmosphere and 1148.34 MPa under argon atmosphere. The microstructure under an argon atmosphere obtained low porosity values (13.13 %), which correspond to a sintering density of 6.98 g/cm3, homogeneity in the microstructure, and little decarburization. These results are different from the microstructure obtained by sintering under vacuum controlled atmosphere because there are evident decarburization and inhomogeneity of the microstructure. There are no significant differences in the effects on the response surface under the two control atmospheres, and the samples do not reach the total densification values, due to the presence of porosity, thus obtaining an undesired microstructure. In consequence, a third control atmosphere of 75 % H2 and 25 % N2 is included under the manufacturing conditions that offer the best mechanical properties, i.e. compaction pressure of 750 MPa and then sintering temperature of 1375 °C, guaranteeing the presence of the liquid phase. Results of this last atmosphere achieved a sintering density of 7.1 g/cm3, a homogeneous martensitic matrix microstructure with homogeneous carbide distribution, a hardness of 594 HV, a flexural strength of 1416.91 MPa and the best wear resistance, compared with the two atmospheres initially used. Once the manufacturing path for the M-type tool steel by powder metallurgy was defined, the grain size growth was computationally model using the proposal of S. J. Park [1]. The author uses the Arrhenius’ Law to express the velocity in the grain size when increasing the temperature and its microstructural evolution rises in function of time. The ODE45 from MATLAB software was used for the solution of the proposed differential equation, which describes the behavior of the simplified growth rate. The variables of the mathematical model were obtained with the experimental sintering model from 900 °C with a grain size of 2.42 µm. Then, nine more samples were used for grain size measurements as time goes by; therefore, the activation energy was 266.91 kJ/mol, the pre-exponential factor was 3x1010 µm3/s and the final grain size of 75.5 µm at 1375 °C holding by 60 minutes. Finally, the manufactured steel was subjected to heat treatments to complete the manufacturing process. The steel was quenched, tempered, and annealed by globalization for 48 hours, improving the hardness values to 812HV, 813 HV, and 742 HV, respectively. The microstructure was favored by the last thermal treatment to achieve the dissolution of the segregated carbides at the grain boundary to the fine martensitic matrix.
