Historia, arte y ciencia. Confrontación entre Aristóteles y Giambattista Vico en torno al estatus de la historia

Abstract

When contemporary authors reconstruct the discussion on the status of history, they tend to think that this topic has only developed since the second half of the 18th century. This temporal limitation leads them to believe any satisfactory answer that is intended to be given to the discussion must be framed between the exclusive disjunction created by those whom believe history is a science and those who believe it is an art (the two dominant positions in recent years). In the present paper I show we can find previous developments in the discussion that could express divergent positions before those currently held. To do so, I confront the isolationist thesis expressed by Aristotle in Poetic's Chapter 9 ―for whom history is neither a science nor an art― with the inclusivist thesis expressed by Giambattista Vico in The New Science ―for whom history is a science necessarily involving poetic knowledge.

Cuando los autores contemporáneos reconstruyen la discusión sobre el estatus de la historia tienden a pensar que este tema se ha desarrollado sólo a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII. Esta limitación temporal los lleva a creer que cualquier respuesta satisfactoria que se pretenda dar a la discusión debe estar enmarcada entre la disyunción exclusiva creada por quienes creen que la historia es una ciencia y quienes creen que es un arte, las dos posturas dominantes en los últimos siglos. En el presenta trabajo muestro que podemos encontrar desarrollos anteriores de la discusión que expresan posiciones divergentes a las actualmente sostenidas. Para hacerlo confronto la tesis aislacionista expresada por Aristóteles en el capítulo 9 de la Poética ―para quien la historia no es ni una ciencia ni un arte― con la tesis inclusiva expresada por Giambattista Vico en la Ciencia Nueva ―para quien la historia es una ciencia que involucra necesariamente un conocimiento de tipo poético.
