The pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) is a very important vegetable in the world for its contribution to food and medicine. There are not many improved varieties of this species in Colombia. For this reason, the objective of the present study was to obtain new populations of elite squash in terms of number of fruits per plant (NFP) and fruit weight (FP). The experiment was carried out at the Experimental Center of the National University of Colombia, Palmira (CEUNP) from July 2021 to June 2022. The plant material was obtained by crossing the cultivars UNAPAL-Bolo Verde x UNAPAL-Llano Grande in three cycles of recurrent selection by self-fertilization. The selection carried out highlighted the behavior of populations 12, 32, 71 and 115 that presented a range of 4~6 fruits per plant with an average weight of 1.32-2.52 kg/fruit in F3 populations. In terms of heterosis the F1 generation presented the greatest gains with respect to the average of the parents with values for yield per plant of 26.6 kg (Heterosis: 127.7%), number of fruits per plant ~ 6.3 (73.8%), fruit weight ~4.2 Kg (27.4%) and a flesh thickness of 3.9 cm (11.8%), however, a decrease in vigor was observed in the F2 and F3 generations, suggesting inbreeding effects in the behavior of the progenies. The above results validate that producing F1 hybrids in this species is the best option to obtain commercial cultivars with characteristics of industrial interest and higher productivity per area.Palabras clave
