This thesis began as an inquiry into a pattern that he perceived to be violent and hierarchical in a large number of works of art. In developing the research I called this pattern Cartesian spatial binary. I have understood that it is a representational device of long duration. This device builds, from gender technologies, the gender difference maintaining the hierarchical opposition man/woman. The Cartesian spatial binary, by force of repetition, becomes an optical unconscious that directs our gaze. The Cartesian spatial binary is a vertical and horizontal coordinate structure -two cuts in the substance of the world-, which orders the world; locates and spatializes humans, events, and things. The vertical coordinate is presented and is ideologically understood as the place of power, agency, masculine and human. The horizontal is understood as a location of impotence, submission, of the feminine and the almost human, the inhuman and less than human. From an intersectional problematization I will show through studies of archival images -as a methodological tool-, how that binary that naturalizes from the image, subalternization, inequality and violence operates. The Cartesian spatial binary has been naturalized by art, museums and the Academy of Fine Arts in its modern manifestation; so much so that, regardless of it, it inhabits our daily imaginaries and crosses our bodies. Keywords
