Introduction: Some research has linked lower vitamin D levels and serotonergic dysregulation in functional bowel disorders (FBD) that arise from disordered interactions in the gut-brain axis. Other factors that may be associated with FBD are diet, physical activity, and psycho-emotional conditions. Objective: to determine whether altered serum concentrations of serotonin, vitamin D, inadequate dietary habits related to intestinal health and a sedentary lifestyle are association factors for the development of functional intestinal disorders in a group of adults aged 18 to 60 years from Bogotá. Methods: study of 87 controls and 79 cases, which corresponded to people diagnosed with FBD according to ROME IV criteria. Serotonin and 25(OH)D concentrations, C-reactive protein, fiber consumption, water, prebiotics, and probiotics were evaluated; physical activity (IPAQ) and stress, anxiety and depression (DASS-21). Results: altered serum concentrations of serotonin, vitamin D, inadequate eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle are factors that are not associated with the development of FBD in the study population, but it was found that male sex (OR 0.17; CI95 % 0.74-0.42, p=0.000*), DASS-21 global score (OR 1.10; 95% CI 1.05-1.15, p=0.000*) and the prebiotic and probiotics consumption score (OR 0.94; 95% CI 0.89-0.98, p=0.006*) are factors that are associated with the presence of FBD. Conclusions: a significant association was identified between the existence of anxiety, stress, and depression with the presence of FBD. Likewise, it is considered necessary to continue investigating the relationship between the consumption of prebiotics and probiotics and the development of FBD.
