The carnation is one of the most used cut flowers in the world, and despite its relevance for agribusiness in the world, many basic aspects of its biology have yet to be studied, since there is no description of the carnation's growth process. The research objective was to make a phenological description of development and subsequently propose a phenological model for carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.), estimating the base temperature, in the vegetative and reproductive phenological stages and determining the duration of these in terms of degree-days, in order to predict the date of and peak of cutting. The study was carried out in a carnation production farm, nearby the municipality of Tocancipá - Cundinamarca (Colombia), monitoring the stems of three different varieties, in 4 different plantings during the years 2018 and 2019, where the dates of appearance of the phenological stages were recorded until the cut and producing a BBCH scale. The base temperature for each phenological stage and each variety corresponds to the temperature at which the minimum value of the coefficient of variation is reached by using a quadratic regression model, or where the first derivative of the regression model is equal to zero. The length of the three phenological stages in terms of degree-days were determined using the values of the mean daily temperatures and the estimated base temperatures. The results showed that the three evaluated varieties present different life cycles from planting to harvest, in addition that the base temperature and the accumulated degree-days differ depending on the state of development of the crop and the evaluated variety. In general terms, when studying the three varieties, it was determined that an average of 2580,7 accumulated degree days and 185 days are required from planting to harvesting the flower.Palabras clave
