The present study determined the changes in forest structure, as well as changes in alpha and beta diversity, along an altitudinal gradient on the Andes-Amazon transition in the department of Caquetá (Colombia). The altitudinal gradient was divided into three elevation bands (Band 1: 600-800 m alt.; Band 2: 1400-1600 m alt. & Band 3: 2200-2400 m alt.). In each of the elevation bands, three 2500 m² plots were established where all the trees with DBH ≥ 10 cm were measured, and three 400 m² subplots were established to evaluate individuals with DBH ≥ 1 cm. The most relevant families were the Lauraceae and Melastomataceae (52 spp.). Tree height along the gradient did not exhibit significant variation; the intermediate elevation band exhibited trees with the largest diameters, which also support the largest aboveground biomass contents. Alpha-diversity tends to diminish along the elevation gradient, and the lower band (600-800 m alt.) exhibits significant differences with the intermediate (1400-1600 m alt.) and superior (2200-2400 m alt.) elevation bands. None of the soil chemical variables had significant effects on biomass and richness; however sand and clay did correlate with wealth. Results evidenced a strong change in species along the gradient, with the superior band presenting the most significant differences. Changes along the elevation gradient are supported by the hypothesis of physiological restrictions related to changes in temperature, which define the abundance of species at their optimum elevation.eng
