Resumen
Esta tesis explora la contingencia y la autonomía del plástico en Latinoamérica, tomando como referencia el texto material producido por el diseño en su historia vertiginosa y difícil. Ello implicó interrogar el régimen de sentido que lo ha constituido como recurso para la manufactura y, a la vez, como redentor y verdugo de la humanidad, con el propósito de esbozar caminos alternativos para un problema que no admite soluciones heroicas. Desde los archivos del diseño en Latinoamérica, y mediante un marco de aproximación que articula filosofía, estética, sociología e historia, se erige aquí una poética mínima de la vida social en una base material atravesada por conflictos irresueltos e inexplorados. Esta poética ha procurado evitar los encasillamientos que podrían reducir el trabajo a una “tesis de materiales”, y sí, lo es, pero conviene precisar de qué materiales: se trata de reconocer en el plástico un objeto de uso en sí mismo, portador de una singularidad ontológica que se manifiesta en producciones y representaciones con frecuencia marginadas del debate cultural. Usar el material plástico significa, entonces, habitar un mundo pensado a través de un compás axiológico, de una contingencia modal y de un espectáculo de texturas… plásticas y de plástico. Abstract
This dissertation explores the contingency and autonomy of plastic in Latin America, taking as its point of departure the material text produced by design throughout its vertiginous and difficult history. This required interrogating the regime of meaning that has constituted plastic both as a resource for manufacturing and as humanity’s redeemer and executioner, with the aim of sketching alternative paths for a problem that admits no heroic solutions. From the archives of design in Latin America, and through an approach that brings together philosophy, aesthetics, sociology, and history, the work erects a minimal poetics of social life upon a material base traversed by unresolved and unexplored conflicts. This poetics seeks to avoid the pigeonholes that might reduce the project to a “thesis on materials”, and yes, it is that, but it is worth asking: what kind of materials? The point is to recognize in plastic an object of use in its own right, one that carries an ontological singularity manifested in productions and representations often marginalized from cultural debate. To use plastic, then, is to inhabit a world conceived through an axiological compass, a modal contingency, and a spectacle of textures… plastic and of plastic.
