There is a probability of transmission of these diseases between feral and domestic pigs. The aims of this study are to assess the risk level of dispersal of feral pigs in the Caribbean and Orinoquía regions of Colombia, and to identify the ecological and environmental factors that would facilitate the dispersal of feral pigs (S. scrofa) into RUNAP protected areas in these two regions. For this purpose, we conducted a network and functional connectivity analysis of S. scrofa applying electrical circuit theory and graph theory. This methodology assumes that the probability of dispersal risk increases according to the presence of cimarron/feral pigs; the location of backyard pig farms; low resistances to movement; and short distances between backyard pig farms. We found that a 24.41% (out of 1,598 nodes) of the analyzed nodes in the Caribbean region had a high or very high risk of dispersal of pigs, and a 25.23% for the Orinoquia region (out of 543 nodes). We identified common characteristics in the areas of highest risk for both regions, such as: the dominance of anthropized land covers (clean pastures and crop mosaics), the availability of water, and the lack of sanitary or veterinary care for the cimarron/feral pigs. Regarding the RUNAP protected areas with presence of zones with high or very high risk of pig dispersal, we found three protected areas corresponding to swamp complexes (ciénagas) for the Caribbean region, while for the Orinoquia region no high-risk areas were identified. The prediction of areas of higher risk of dispersal of pigs could guide different actors on where to focus or increase for prevention and control measures of disease transmission through direct contact between all cimarron/feral pigs, domestic pigs, and wildlife species.eng
