| dc.description.abstract | Begonia (Begoniaceae) is one of the most diverse genera of angiosperms, with more than 2,000 described species. Species are found mainly in tropical regions of the America, Asia, and Africa, with main centers of diversification in Southeast Asia and the mountainous areas of the American tropics, especially the Andes. In Colombia, approximately 90 species and 15 sections of the genus occur, mainly in the Andean zone. This work aims to review the circumscription and delimitation of the species in the Begonia secc. Lepsia, with particular emphasis on Begonia foliosa, a species with a wide distribution and high morphological variability, as well as to establish its phylogenetic relationships and generate a new taxonomic treatment. To this end, in addition to the usual methods used in taxonomy, statistical approximations are applied to resolve the B. foliosa complex, finding that this complex comprises at least three different species. The inclusion of morphological characters not used in the statistical analysis, as well as phylogenetic evidence, supported the presence of nine different species in the B. foliosa complex. The synonymization of Begonia meridensis with Begonia opuliflora is also proposed based on morphological and phylogenetic evidence, and the phylogenetic position of Begonia barrigae is clarified. A treatment is presented that increases the number of species in the section from eight to 14. The study of Begonia secc. Lepsia through different tools allowed us to understand the hidden diversity and to elucidate the high diversity at the floral level, which until now was little recognized. | eng |
