Un río fiel a su corriente: el biógrafo Fernando Vallejo

Abstract

Este trabajo es un estudio sobre las biografías escritas por Fernando Vallejo, y en particular, un ejercicio para intentar explicar y caracterizar su arte biográfico. Barba Jacob el mensajero, Chapolas negras y El cuervo blanco no se pueden entender sino a la luz de la obra ficcional de Vallejo, y por ello en la primera parte exploro las resonancias de forma y contenido entre las biografías y las obras ficcionales. La segunda característica que considero importante en el arte biográfico del escritor antioqueño es el protagonismo compartido entre el biógrafo y el biografiado, pues el vínculo emocional entre Vallejo y los tres personajes afecta lo que se narra y cómo se narra, y especialmente, la escritura de las biografías implica para Vallejo mucho más que el conocimiento de la vida de los otros: es un descubrimiento de sí mismo. La tercera característica que analizo es cómo la inclusión del proceso de búsqueda y escritura se convierte en un motivo narrativo. En ese sentido, estudio cómo Vallejo se construye como un biógrafo responsable, exhaustivo y con información suficiente para establecer juicios de valor y generar opiniones. En la conclusión retomo estos argumentos para valorar la manera en que Vallejo subvierte principios fundamentales del género y construye su propio arte biográfico.

Abstract: This work is a study of the biographies written by Fernando Vallejo, and specifically, an effort to explain and characterize his biographical art. Barba Jacob el mensajero, Chapolas negras and El cuervo blanco cannot be understood unless they are grasped in relationship with Vallejo’s fictional work. Hence, in the first part I explore the echoes of form and content between the biographies and the fictional works of the author. The second characteristic that I consider fundamental in Vallejo’s biographical art is the shared protagonism between the biographer and the subject, because the emotional bond between Vallejo and his three characters affects what is narrated and how it is narrated. Specifically, the writing of the biographies implies much more than the mere acknowledgement of the other’s life: it is the discovery of the self. The third characteristic that I analyze is how the process of investigation becomes a motive in the narration. Therefeore, I study the way in which Vallejo portrays himself as a responsible and exhaustive biographer that has sufficient information to stablish judgments and opinions. In the conclusion I summarize these arguments to evaluate the way in which Vallejo subverts the vital ideas of the genre and constructs his own biographical art.
